Making The Crochet Balaclava
Materials
- Big Merino yarn (100% wool) - Bulky weight (weight 5)
- 5 mm and 6 mm crochet hooks
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle
- Measuring tape
Step by step Pattern
Neck/Base
- Start by creating a slip knot, then crochet a chain (ch) that measures just above 20 cm, approximately 40 chains (ch).
- Skip the first ch, and start single crocheting (sc) in the second ch from the hook. Continue single crocheting across all chains. You should have 39 sc by the end of this row.
- Chain 1 (ch1), turn your work. From now on, crochet in the back loop only (BLO) of each stitch.
- Skip the turning chain, back loop single crochet (BLO sc) in each stitch across. Chain 1 and turn at the end.
- Repeat step 4 until you have 94 rows in total. This should measure around 50 cm. You're creating a ribbed pattern for elasticity.
Joining the Base
- Fold the work in half, with the intention of creating a cylindrical shape for the neck.
- Using the 5mm hook, join the edges by slip stitching (sl st) through the back loop of the stitch closest to you and the front loop of the stitch on the other side. Continue this all the way across to close the edge seamlessly.
- Cut the yarn and fasten it off.
Creating the Hood
- Connect yarn to the edge of the neck/base where there is the "not perfect" stitch. Chain 2 (counts as the first half double crochet [hdc]).
- Work one hdc in the side of each row around the neck opening (you should have 94 hdc to reflect the rows you made).
- Switch to a 6mm hook. The work now transitions to creating the hood while leaving an opening for the face.
- Chain 2 (counts as hdc), turn the work to start the hood. You'll crochet back and forth.
- Begin with a hdc in the back loop only (BLO), starting in the fourth stitch from the chain. Continue BLO hdc in every stitch across to the last stitch. In the last stitch, make an additional hdc to increase.
- The subsequent rows will involve increases in both the first and last stitches (make 2 hdc in both the first and last stitches of each row) for a few rows to widen the opening of the hood. This part measures about 17 cm.
- Continue to crochet back and forth without increases for the next 12 rows to lengthen the hood to about 30 cm from the brim to the top.
Closing the Hood
- Fold the hood in half to align the open edges of the hood.
- Using slip stitches, stitch through both layers across to close the top of the hood.
- Fasten off, cut the yarn, and weave in all ends.
Finishing
- The balaclava is now finished. Turn the balaclava out so the seam is on the inside.
