Making The Crochet Baby Blanket

Materials:

  • 1 cake of Lion Brand Mandala yarn (150g / 590 yards / 100% acrylic; size 3 lightweight/DK)
  • 5.5 mm (I/9) crochet hook
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

Step by step Pattern

Foundation Chain:

  • Begin with a slipknot.
  • Chain 117 (chain count should be a multiple of three for the pattern to work).

Row 1:

  • Skip the first chain from the hook and single crochet into the second chain.
  • [V Stitch starts here] Skip one chain, find the next, and work (single crochet, chain two, single crochet) into the same chain. This creates a small V stitch.
  • Skip two chains, find the third, and work (single crochet, chain two, single crochet) into the same chain.
  • Continue this pattern across the row: skip two chains and work a V stitch into the third.
  • You should end up with 38 V stitches by the end of the row, with a single crochet on each end.

Row 2:

  • Chain one, turn your work.
  • Single crochet into the top of the first single crochet of the previous row.
  • Find the chain two space in the center of the V stitch and work (single crochet, chain two, single crochet) into it.
  • Repeat this for every V stitch across the row.
  • You will maintain the 38 V stitches with a single crochet at the beginning and the end of the row.
  • Chain one and turn at the end of the row.

Repeat Row 2:

  • Continue to work as established in Row 2 for a total of 77 rows or until your blanket reaches the desired size, keeping an odd number of rows.
  • Remember to chain one and turn at the end of each row.

Border:

  • Starting from where you left off, work a single crochet, chain two, and single crochet into the first single crochet at the end of row 77 to continue the border.
  • Skip a row edge, find the next space, and work your V stitch pattern (single crochet, chain two, single crochet).
  • Continue down the side, working a V stitch into the end of every other row.
  • Work the border across the bottom of the blanket, following the pattern of the foundation chain.
  • Work the border up the opposite side in the same manner as the first side.
  • When you reach the top, close the border by working into the space of the first single crochet, chain two, and join with a slip stitch to the top of that first single crochet.

Finishing:

  • Cut the yarn and fasten off.
  • Weave in all ends with a yarn needle.
  • Block the blanket according to the method you prefer, allowing it to dry completely before using or gifting.
