Making The Crochet Beanie
Materials Required:
- 6.5 mm crochet hook
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle
- Category 5 yarn (bulky weight) - In the video, Lion Brand Color Made Easy yarn in green is used
Step by step Pattern
- Foundation Chain: Start by chaining 21.
- Row 1:
- Start in the second chain from the hook, create a half double crochet slip stitch (a stitch introduced in the video that mimics knitting) across until there are two chains left.
- Slip stitch the remaining two chains.
- Row 2:
- Chain 1 and turn your work.
- Slip stitch into the back loops only of the first two stitches.
- Continue with the half double crochet slip stitch across the row.
- Rows 3 onwards:
- Repeat the pattern of Row 2 (half double crochet slip stitch across with final two stitches being slip stitches) for a total of 32 rows for the newborn size. (Adjustments for size variations can be found on the linked blog).
- This technique creates a texture resembling knitting but is achieved through crochet.
Closing The Hat:
- After completing the required rows, cut the yarn, leaving enough length to sew the hat closed (about a meter). Thread this yarn end through a tapestry needle.
- Before sewing, identify the outside of the hat by the direction of the "V"s in your stitches. The normal position of the "V" is the outside, and the upside-down "V" is the inside. This will help in ensuring you sew it correctly.
- Use the tapestry needle to sew the sides of the hat together. The method shown in the video involves sewing from the outside, passing the needle through one side to the other, ensuring the stitches align.
- Once you reach the top, tie off your work securely with a couple of knots to prevent unraveling.
- To close the top, use a zigzag stitch across the opening, then pull tight to gather. Finish by tying off securely.
- If you left an extra bit of yarn, as suggested, you can now weave in ends or use them to attach a pom-pom.
Attaching a Pom-Pom:
- Use a crochet hook to pull the pom-pom's strings through to the inside of the hat.
- Tie the strings securely on the inside. The host demonstrates a simple knot for easy pom-pom removal but recommends a secure attachment if the pom-pom is permanent.
