Making The Crochet Baby Octopus
Materials Needed
- Sweet Snuggles light yarn from Michaels (or your yarn of choice)
- 5.5-millimetre crochet hook
- 12-millimeter safety eyes
- Scissors
- Polyester stuffing (e.g. from Walmart)
- Stitch marker (or a bobby pin)
- Yarn needle (optional)
Step by step Pattern
Magic Ring Alternative (Round 1)
- Make a slip knot and chain two (ch 2).
- Work seven single crochet stitches (sc) into the second chain from the hook.
- Do not join, work in a continuous round. This will be the start of the baby octopus head.
Round 2 (Increases)
- Work two single crochet stitches into each stitch around (14 sc in total).
Rounds 3 and 4 (Creating the Sphere Shape)
- Work one single crochet stitch in each stitch around (14 sc in each round).
Round 5 (Creating the Bottom of the Head)
- Start by making one single crochet stitch.
- Then make a decrease by using three invisible decrease techniques: Use the front loops of the next two stitches, yarn under, and complete the decrease.
- Repeat around resulting in a sequence of one single crochet stitch followed by three decreases, reducing the number of stitches to a total of 8 around.
Placing Safety Eyes
- Place the safety eyes between rounds 3 and 4, either close together or slightly apart, depending on your preference.
Creating the Tentacles (Round 6)
- Working into the front loops only of the head, start the round with a slip stitch.
- For each tentacle: Chain two, work a slip stitch into the second chain from the hook, then slip stitch into the front loop of the next stitch in the head.
- Repeat this step until you have 8 tentacles around.
Finishing
- Cut the yarn, leaving enough tail to sew the bottom. Sew the opening closed by threading through the remaining back loops.
- Attach a yarn needle or use a crochet hook to bring the yarn through your work to hide the tail.
- Stuff the octopus head before closing, making sure not to overstuff.
- After securely fastening the bottom, weave in any tails.
Secure the Eyes
- Add the washers to the safety eyes on the inside of the octopus to secure them in place.
