Materials Needed:

  • DK (Double Knit) weight yarn (~200-300 yards depending on the size)
  • 4.00 mm (G) crochet hook
  • Stitch markers
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors
  • Buttons (about 4-5, size can vary based on preference)

Abbreviations:

  • ch – chain
  • sc – single crochet
  • dc – double crochet
  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • rep – repeat
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • dc2tog – double crochet two together (decrease)

Gauge:
Check your gauge by crocheting a small swatch (about 4x4 inches) in dc and compare to the pattern gauge. Adjust hook size accordingly.

Step by step Pattern

Begin with a ch of 52.
1 dc in the 3rd ch from the hook, then dc in the next 3 sts, 2 dc in next st, dc in next 4 sts; rep from * to * across to last 2 sts, 2 dc in next st, dc in last st.
Body:
Ch 3 to turn, which counts as the first dc. Work dc in each dc across.
Increase at the beginning and end of every row and at each "corner" to form the sleeves and width of the cardigan for about 4-5 rows.
Separate for sleeves and body: Using stitch markers, skip the stitches marked for sleeves and crochet the front and back pieces. You'll be working back and forth in rows.
After the division, continue straight without increases to the desired length, usually about 5-6 inches.
Sleeves:
Join yarn with a sl st to the armpit of the sleeve.
Ch 3 and work a row of dc around the armhole, using stitch markers as a guide.
Work in rounds for each sleeve, decreasing stitches if necessary - dc2tog can be used for shaping.
Continue each sleeve to the desired length (usually about 4-5 inches for 0-6 months).
Finish with a ribbed cuff: Ch 1, then sc in each st around. Repeat for several rows.
Trim and Finishing:
Crochet around the entire cardigan with sc to create a neat border, making buttonholes in the last row by chaining 2 and skipping two stitches at the positions where you want your buttons.
Sew on the buttons corresponding to the buttonholes.
Additional Notes:
Adjust the number of starting chains for the size you need, adding increments that match the pattern repeats.
You may also vary your sleeve and body lengths to accommodate the size you want.
Always check your measurements as you go, and make sure to compare the cardigan against standard baby size charts for consistency.
