Making Your Crochet Pet Bed

Materials Needed:

  • Bulky (chunky) yarn (about 400-600 yards, depending on the size of the bed)
  • 10mm (N) crochet hook
  • A large eye yarn needle
  • Stitch markers
  • Scissors
  • Polyester stuffing or a pre-made round cushion to fit inside the crocheted piece

Abbreviations:

  • ch – chain
  • sc – single crochet
  • dc – double crochet
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • inc – increase (two sc in the same stitch)
  • ( ) – Repeat the instructions within brackets as indicated
  • Gauge:
  • The gauge isn't crucial for a pet bed, but a tighter stitch will make a more durable bed.

Step by step Pattern

Base:
Create a magic circle or ch 4 and sl st to form a ring.
Round 1: Ch 1 (does not count as a st), work 8 sc into the ring, sl st to the first sc to join.
Round 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each st around (16 sc), sl st to join.
Round 3: Ch 1, 1 sc in the next st, 2 sc in the next st; rep from * to * around (24 sc), sl st to join.
Continue increasing in this manner (inc every other st, then every 3rd st, every 4th st, etc.) until the base is as wide as desired for the pet bed.
Sides:
Next Round: Ch 1, sc in the back loop only of each st around, sl st to join. This creates a nice edge to the bottom of your pet bed.
Following Rounds: Ch 1, sc in each st around. Do not join rounds anymore; continue working in a spiral (use a stitch marker to mark the beginning of the rounds). You may also switch to working front loop only if you prefer a ribbed texture for the walls.
Continue working in sc without increases until the bed walls are at the desired height (usually about 5-8 inches).
Optional Edge:
For a nice finishing touch, you can add a contrasting color or work a simple scalloped edge.

To do a scalloped edge, skip 2 sts, 5 dc in the next st, skip 2 sts, sl st in the next st; repeat from * to * around.
Join with a sl st, fasten off, and weave in ends.
Finishing Touches:
Ensure the last round is tight enough to hold the shape but still stretchy enough to fit the cushion or stuffing.
If you are stuffing the bed, make sure the filling is evenly distributed and the bed retains a comfortable shape. Secure the stuffing by stitching through the pet bed top in several places.
Weave in all ends securely.
Additional Notes:
You can adjust the yarn weight and hook size to change the size of the bed.
You can create a sturdier base by double crocheting instead of single crocheting.
Make sure there are no protruding elements or loose yarn ends that your pet could chew on.
Always supervise your pet with handmade items to ensure they do not ingest any materials.
